PolyCipherSM is developing a Downloadable
Conditional Access System (DCAS), a security architecture that enables the
download of security clients to cable-ready devices, in order to safeguard
video, audio and other content delivered over cable networks.
Our
advanced PolyCipherSM
DCAS technology offers greater flexibility and security combined with much
lower costs and is poised to replace the more cumbersome CableCARD™
approach.
PolyCipher is a consortium of U.S. cable industry operators
and is uniquely qualified to lead the industry's effort to create a
comprehensive DCAS infrastructure including small, hardened, affordable and
secure microprocessors available from industry leading semiconductor
manufacturers and included in a wide range of cable-ready devices - televisions,
set-top boxes and products not yet announced.
DCAS offers several new and important benefits...
- Cable operators will no longer have to
store, install, repair or ship security cards for set-top boxes.
Devices using the PolyCipher DCAS chip will be able to automatically
download both current and future security systems. Upgrades or system
changeovers will be invisible to cable customers.
- Manufacturers of cable-ready devices
can include a PolyCipher certified DCAS chip in their products to
offer easy-to-use, highly capable solutions at lower price points. The
chip is inexpensive to include in televisions, for example, and it
provides an enhanced plug & play, cable-ready experience for
consumers.
PolyCipher is currently working with cable operators and technology
providers to finalize the DCAS offering as quickly as possible. Along with
its partners, PolyCipher is developing components, specifications and test
protocols that will lay the foundation for cable industry security in the
21st century.
How It Works
When a device first attaches to a cable network, it
establishes its identity and downloads the appropriate security system,
booting from the safety of a secure PolyCipher DCAS microprocessor into a
full-featured and fully-trusted security client. Our PolyCipher
architecture accommodates security clients from the leading Conditional
Access System (CAS) vendors, thus assuring both high security and
compatibility with existing infrastructures.
